Nehemiah 6:2-4

New International Version

²Sanballat and Geshem sent me this message: “Come, let us meet together in one of the villages^[a] on the plain of Ono.^(A)”

But they were scheming to harm me; ³so I sent messengers to them with this reply: “I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down to you?” ⁴Four times they sent me the same message, and each time I gave them the same answer.

²⁹all these now join their fellow Israelites the nobles, and bind themselves with a curse and an oath^(A) to follow the Law of God given through Moses the servant of God and to obey carefully all the commands, regulations and decrees of the Lord our Lord.

³⁰“We promise not to give our daughters in marriage to the peoples around us or take their daughters for our sons.^(B)

³¹“When the neighboring peoples bring merchandise or grain to sell on the Sabbath,^(C) we will not buy from them on the Sabbath or on any holy day. Every seventh year we will forgo working the land^(D) and will cancel all debts.^(E)
